This is the Romanian President,Traian Basescu. The Romanian Parliament has just voted to impeach him after abuses of power.

From the France24 article:

The vote of 256-114 in parliament came as the European Union expressed concern about rule of law in the country.

Senate Speaker Crin Antonescu says a referendum will now be organized to allow voters to decide whether Basescu, should be ousted from the presidency, which he has held since 2004.

Basescu addressed lawmakers and denied accusations of authoritarianism. The impeachment vote comes as he and Prime Minister Victor Ponta are engaged in a bitter power struggle.

Basescu was impeached in 2007 but survived a referendum on the issue; his popularity has declined steeply in the past two years.

We curved back and fourth through the forest when suddenly the tree line broke away and the entire world unfolded before us. Up here everything is serene and silent. Grass is a deep shade of green; short and soft; sprinkled among great masses of rock. The sun is setting over the mountain and its angle lights a fire in every flower and pebble around us.

Romania Trip - Fall of 2006

This is one of the best trips my family and I had ever done (pre-graduation present for my son, who graduated in 2007).

I was researching for some cool destinations in Europe - something that will give my children a unique experience but wouldn’t cost a fortune. Romania came to mind. While I was really into vampires and Dracula and all of that stuff at the time (come to think of it, I still am), I never realized how amazing Romania really is until we got there.

Arriving in Romania in the middle of the afternoon was very pleasant and the airport authorities were very courteous. We rented a car from Hertz and surprisingly breezed through it for under half an hour. We got a map and drove through Bucharest traffic. Husband drove and I navigated for the first time and surprisingly, the roads were generally marked.

The next day, we drove from Bucharest to Transylvania. My husband and I wanted to surprise the kids so we didn’t tell them that we were staying at a castle estate called Count Kalnoky (1282 AD) (link:http://www.transylvaniancastle.com/). It was November so we were so lucky to be able to book and stayed at the main manor. We were the only guests they had during that time. We were welcomed by the staff with a glass of port (son, was really excited to have port — drinking age in Romania is 16 and above) and they ushered us to the living room by the fireplace.

Meals in Count Kalnoky were cooked by the staff and served in the basement where they stored their wine and have a huge fireplace. Candles illuminated the room. Meals were served with two bottles of Romanian wine - red (merlot) and white (sauvignon blanc). Talk about style!! It was like going back in time. The next three days were full of surprises as we were able to see the Carpathian mountains and drove through fall foliage, and picnic lunches were prepared by the staff. We were sad to leave Count Kalnoky when it was time to go to our next destination - Bran, where we’ll find Castle Bran (where Count Dracula aka Vlad the Impaler, apparently stayed briefly) before retreating to his real castle in Poenari. Unfortunately, we were not able to see the Castle Poenari. It was closed in November 2006 and was only accessible by foot - and climbing 3,000 steps. I guess this will give us another excuse to come back - maybe fall of 2013.

Other great castles/fortresses we saw were: Peles Castle in Sinaia, and the great Rasnov Fortress in Brasov.

If you are looking into traveling in Eastern Europe - Romania is a great destination. It was an unforgettable trip of a lifetime.

Vlad “the Impaler” Dracula was a three-time prince of Wallachia, located in southern Romania, ruling mainly from 1456 to 1462. He is most famous for his harsh and deadly punishments against the Turks, as well as petty criminals.

Dracula’s favorite method of punishment was impalement, placing the victim on a sharpened stick so that the point entered through the anus and exited out the mouth. Some victims remained alive for hours, or even days, after being impaled. Unfaithful and sexually uninhibited women were impaled through the vagina. Thousands of these victims were left to rot in plain sight in order to frighten off enemies, including the neighboring Ottomans.

However, this was not the only method of torture Dracula made use of. Boiling alive, smashing of the head, and throwing the victims into pits were some of his other favorite methods of punishment and torture. He reportedly ordered a woman to have her flesh flayed off in a public square, leaving the pieces of skin and muscle raw on a wooden table nearby.

Estimates of the number of his victims range from 40,000 to 100,000, comparable to the cumulative number of executions over four centuries of European witchhunts.
